Help us by turning off cars in the parking lot

Dear Parents,

In an effort to create the best possible learning environment for our students, we are asking that parents picking up or dropping off their children turn off their cars while they wait. The idling cars in the parking lot release fumes that are entering the classrooms with windows on that side of the building. These fumes create a distracting environment that is not conducive to student learning. Please help us in our effort to create a classroom that is as healthy and education friendly as possible by turning your cars off while waiting for your children in our parking lot.

Thank you so much!

Sincerely,

SJH Staff and Students

Students of the Week!

This week's Students of the Week are:

Chloe Mensch

Nominated by: Mrs. Rutledge

Since the very first week of class I have been looking forward to honoring Chloe as Student of the Week. Right away she exhibited strong skills that made her worthy of the award. Throughout the year she has relentlessly continued to demonstrate that she is at the top of her class. Not only has she earned straight A’s in language arts this year, but she sets this standard in all her other classes as well. She’s a hard worker and is fully invested in her education. Some sentiments from her other teachers are “she’s such an individual”, “very attentive in class”, “great artist” and “very responsible. Chloe has made a lasting impression this year. She has set the bar for excellence very high and done so with maturity, grace and dignity. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for this young lady. Congratulations Chloe!

Allison McElroy

Nominated by: Mr. Heffron

This week’s student of the week is Allison McElroy. Allison is the ideal student. When others speak of her words and phrases such as pleasant, hard worker, and a joy to have in class continuously arise. Allison is a very bright young lady who pays attention to detail and displays this trait in her everyday work. She is very friendly and liked by all of her peers. Allison is having a very successful 7th grade year. The qualities and practices that she has displayed so far this year will be reflected in her grades and will lead to a very successful educational career at Sycamore Junior High School.

AIR Testing starting 4/5/16

Dear Sycamore Families,
Next week, our students will be presented with the opportunity to demonstrate their progress on grade level standards via the Ohio achievement tests. As a district, we are pleased that our legislators listened and acted on our concerns regarding last year's tests, replacing PARCC assessments with AIR assessments that our students are familiar with and have previously taken with success. The new assessments will require only half as much time to administer, significantly reducing interruption to instruction.
Below, you will find a link that delineates the testing dates scheduled for students in grades 3 - 12. Information regarding specific times for assessments will be generated at each building and communicated via their newsletters and blogs. Any questions can be directed to your building administrator.
The state’s annual assessments provide a snapshot of your child’s progress in their understanding and application of curriculum standards. From a district perspective, these results allow us to benchmark ourselves against similar districts and to identify trends in data that will guide our work with teachers and students.
Our teachers work diligently to fully prepare your child to be successful on these assessments and in other aspects of their growth and development. We strongly encourage all students to participate to provide a more accurate indication of their hard work and our student’s accomplishments. As we have seen with the release of last year’s results, a large number of opt-outs can drastically affect the district grades handed down by the Ohio Department of Education, which does not accurately reflect our students’ success and achievement.
We are so appreciative of the support you provide your children in our partnership together toward academic excellence. If you have any questions regarding testing, please contact your building administrator.

Thanks so much to our PTO for all they provide!

The SJH PTO is pleased to announce that we have approved funding of approximately $7500 of items for our school.  Your support of Flight Fest and other school fundraisers is greatly appreciated and we are proud to let you know how some of this money is being put to use.  Items approved for purchase this year include:

  • Futons
  • Instrument tuners and clip-on microphones
  • Sensory and Mobility equipment for Special Education
  • Set of reading books
  • Exercise Ball Chairs
  • Music Stands and cart
In previous years the PTO has been able to purchase many items for our school to enhance classrooms, provide students with meaningful extracurricular experiences, and aid in learning.  Some of these items are:
  • $17,000 towards the updating of the Media Center
  • Student recognition items
  • Funding for choir trip
  • Many sets of books
  • Exercise Ball chairs
  • Magazines for classrooms
  • Graphing calculators
  • Wireless microphones
  • Tablets
  • Die cut machine and tools
  • Dry erase boards

Opportunity to Review and Comment on Standards

Ohio Department of Education
Ohio’s learning standards in mathematics, English language arts, science and social studies are five years old. The Ohio Department of Education now is reviewing the standards to update them,if revisions are necessary. To get started, the department is asking educators, parents and other members of the public to review and give feedback on the math and English language arts standards.
Educators and parents have an opportunity to review and comment on these standards now through April 5 at ohio-k12.help/standards/. On the Ohio Department of Education’s Standards Revision Web page, a one-page overview for parents has been provided by the department.

Students of the Week!

This week's Students of the Week are:

James Zinnbauer

Nominated by: Sra. Soto

It is with pleasure that nominate James Zinnbauer for this Week's 7th grade Student of the week. James has been an absolute delight to have this year in Spanish Novice 1. His kindness, sense of humor and work ethic are second to none. Everything that James does in class is top notch. Other teachers have wonderful things to say about James as well. Comments like "amazing, "always works hard in class,” “great choice”, and many other compliments were made by James’ teachers. I look forward to seeing James progress throughout the rest of his Novice 1 year and next year as an 8th grader in Novice 2.

Grace Deng

Nominated by: Mrs. Zhang

It is my great privilege to nominate Grace Deng for Sycamore Junior High School’s student recognition. I have been working with Grace Deng for more than one year. Grace is a wonderful young lady and she possesses numerous qualities that make her the perfect candidate for this event. Grace’s positive attitude, determination, discipline, and good citizenship are just a few of her outstanding qualities. Grace consistently impresses me with her perfect performance in Chinese language skills. This subject is very challenging; however, she maintains great interest in it. Every day she brings her best smile to my classroom and she maintains the highest standard. She demonstrates wonderful work habits in the class and excels in every task. Grace has earned A’s every quarter. She is also very kind and willing to help others to create a positive learning environment. Grace is also doing very well in other subjects. She is interested in sports and music. I believe that Grace can accomplish all of her goals in the future. I am so happy to have Grace in my classroom. I hope that her effort and positive attitude can inspire other students in this building. I am delighted to nominate Grace. Grace, keep up your good work!
