Student of the Week!

This week's Students of the Week are:

Nathan Gibson
Nominated by: Mrs. Jarvis

Nathan Gibson is a dedicated learner and strives to do his very best! He consistently performs well in all of his classes, actively seeks understanding of difficult concepts and consistently participates in classroom activities and discussions. He works diligently to maintain an A average in his course load and goes above and beyond spending many hours to get his work done correctly! Nathan demonstrates a positive attitude with a wonderfully contagious smile. He is extremely polite and considerate of others; and proactively contributes to our school as he shares his knowledge and helps others. Nathan is one of the main video announcements contributors as well as one of the go-to and behind the scenes guy for our SJHS News Crew. He is always working to produce the best live video broadcasts possible as well as a 21st Century Learner extraordinaire! Nathan’s love for learning and passion for creativeness challenges him, and others that work with him, to higher levels of learning. Other comments received about Nathan are:

Nathan is a good student!”
-“Nathan does wonderful work!”
-“Nathan is respectful, willing and able to participate. He is ready for class, always on time and always with assignments.”

-“Nathan did a lot of work to promote our Aviator Flight Fest 2015 this year!
Nathan Gibson genuinely exemplifies strong characteristics of what it takes to earn the recognition of “Student of the Week”. He is truly a wonderful asset to our school and community! Thanks Nathan for all that you do and congratulations!

Maria Hill
Nominated by: Mrs. Jenkins

Maria Hill was an immediate choice for the nomination for 7th grade Student of the Week.  Maria always gives her best effort given any task.  She works hard daily, even if the task seems difficult or overwhelming.  Maria and always gets the job done!  Maria works cooperatively with others and has a positive attitude.  Many other Junior High members had great things to say about Maria’s model student behaviors.  Those comments included:-“Works very hard and is a good role model for students around her. “-“Good choice!  She works hard, asks questions, has a desire to do well, helps others, is working on her social skills to be a good person, smiles a lot, respectful to staff.”  -“She has clearly been giving her best and it shows!”Overall, all of Maria’s teachers that she was an awesome choice!  We’ve all enjoyed having Maria this year and getting to know her! Keep up the good work!

Athletes of the Week!

This week's Student Athlete of the Week is:

Max Keller
Max Keller is this year's 7th Grade Green Boy's Basketball Athlete of the Week. Max always comes to practice on time and prepared to work. He has a great personality and attitude. He works hard on all facets of the game and is not afraid to gain additional understanding when necessary. Though his stature is small, he approaches the game like a big man and takes on all comers regardless of size. He hustles on both sides of the ball and pays close attention to detail. Max continues to improve his skills and has been impressive of late on his quick hitting 7 10 ft. jumper in the lane. I look forward to Max's continued growth and development as the season progresses and wish him the very best in his career in basketball and other endeavors.
-Coach Brown

Ava Jackson
The 2015-16 7th Grade Green team Athlete of the Week is Ava Jackson. Through tryouts, practices and the short season, Ava has shown the desire to become a better basketball player by her effort and by being extremely coachable. She constantly looks to improve by executing the things the coaches are teaching that day. Ava doesn't take short cutsand serves as an example to the other players on how to do the drills and how to run the plays. Ava is the type of player every coach wants on their team, and that every successful team needs, a leader by example and a person who wants to improve. Ava is also a great teammate, and makes everyone around her a better player by her actions. I look for Ava to continue to improve, and climb the basketball ladder, a superior athlete, the sky is the limit for Ava. Congratulations!
-Coach McDonald

Cyber Bullying Presentation

In November the PTO hosted Steven Smith from Cincinnati Bell as he presented information on cyber bullying and social media in today's world. We had a great turnout, but also heard from other parents who were interested in an evening presentation on this topic. A survey was sent out in the SJH blog to gauge this interest, and according to the results, we feel it would be beneficial to have Mr. Smith return for an evening presentation.
So, please mark your calendars for Thursday, January 14 at 7pm in the Junior High Auditorium to attend this very important presentation.

A Note From The Assistant Principals...

Parents,
Today we conducted a “fly by” for dress code violations.  Students that were in violation of the dress code were asked to report to the cafeteria to meet with administrators.

We addressed 28 students for dress code violations

  • Violations included wearing leggings and bags that violated our policy of no backpacks/bags
  • 7 students were seen for not having a case on their device
  • 3 students were sent to us with bags holding their PE clothing.  We did some troubleshooting with them regarding this

Parents, we ask for your support in requiring your student to do the following:

  • School issued chromebooks are required to have the green plastic protective case.  If your child has lost or broken his/hers a replacement can be purchased from the school for $20
  • Devices may only be carried in a device sleeve, not a laptop bag or briefcase type bag.  The sleeve can have a cross body strap.  If you would like to purchase an approved device sleeve, you can do so at the Junior High School.
  • Students are permitted to wear leggings ONLY when the shirt they wear covers both the back and front of the leggings.  The shirt must be long enough to cover the student’s rear end and should remain equally as long in the front.

Students that have repeated violations will be assigned school consequences.  We thank you for your assistance in keeping our school safe.

Students of the Week!

This week's Students of the Week are:

Cullen O'Shea
Nominated by: Mrs. Huffman

Cullen was chosen as this week's student of the week because of his overall awesome attitude! He is a hardworking young man who truly exemplifies what students here at Sycamore Junior High should strive to be like! His teachers say that he is caring, fun and has a great sense of humor. He is very polite to adults and students as well! Cullen is a conscientious student who strives to do his best and it shows in both his daily work and grades.
All of his teachers agree that Cullen is a wonderful young man who is a perfect representative of the type of student that make Sycamore Junior High a wonderful place to be.
Congratulations to Cullen O’Shea, this week's 8th grade student of the week

Shubhra Mishra
Nominated by: Mrs. George

This week’s student of the week is Shubhra Mishra.  Shubhra is a new student who arrived from India a little over a month ago.  What a terrific student!  She has transitioned to Sycamore Junior High so well. School is very much a priority for her.  She is disciplined, hard working, and constantly striving for excellence.  She shows significant interest in science and enthusiastically participates in class.  She always has her work completed and shows considerable effort in all she does. Her other teachers strongly support her selection as student of the week, making comments like, “She goes the extra mile to make sure she hands in quality work.  She daily demonstrates high level thinking. She has a strong  work ethic and commitment to her education.  She is a good artist, considerate and responsible.  She is often helping other students and is very humble when receiving praise.”
She is a wonderful addition to our school, and a great role model to her peers.  These reasons are why Shubhra Mishra is this week’s seventh grade student of the week.

Student Bullying Survey

Sycamore Junior High works very hard to create a positive and safe learning environment for every student.  We are asking all of our students, on December 11, to take a short survey during their Aviator Bell.  This survey will consist of a few questions that will provide useful feedback for our Building Climate Committee to target areas of growth for our school.  We are asking that every child completes this survey.

Thank you!
